What is Counselling?

Professional counselling is a safe and confidential collaboration between a qualified counsellor and client, designed to support mental health, emotional wellbeing and self-understanding.

Counselling gives people space to explore concerns, experiences, relationships, emotions and patterns that may be affecting daily life. It is an active process, with clients participating at every stage and working with their counsellor to better understand what is happening and what may need to change.

Counselling may be short-term, long-term or ongoing, depending on the person’s needs. It can support children, young people, adults, couples, families and groups across a wide range of life experiences and concerns.

People seek counselling to help with:
  • Stress, anxiety and low mood

  • Grief, loss and major life changes

  • Relationship and family challenges

  • Parenting concerns

  • Identity, self-esteem and self-understanding

  • Past experiences affecting the present

  • Trauma and emotional distress

  • Substance use or behavioural concerns

  • Spirituality, meaning and personal growth

How counselling may support you
  • Supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing

  • Enhancing self-understanding and awareness

  • Helping identify new perspectives and ways of thinking

  • Supporting emotional tolerance and regulation

  • Encouraging new choices, behaviours and decisions

  • Creating space to explore relationships, identity and life experiences

What to expect

Your counsellor will provide a safe, confidential and supportive space to talk through what is happening in your life. Sessions may involve exploring thoughts, emotions, relationships, past experiences, current challenges and patterns that may be affecting wellbeing.

Counselling is collaborative, meaning you remain an active participant in the process. The length and focus of therapy may vary depending on your needs, goals and the level of support you are seeking.
