What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a modern musculoskeletal treatment that uses fine, sterile needles to target trigger points and areas of muscular tension within the body.
It is grounded in Western anatomy and focuses on muscles, soft tissue, pain patterns and movement function. Treatment is commonly used when muscles feel tight, restricted, overactive or difficult to release through hands-on pressure alone.
During treatment, the needle is applied directly into selected muscle tissue or trigger points. This may create a local twitch response, helping the muscle fibres contract and release, while supporting the body’s natural healing response.
Dry needling may be used as part of a broader treatment plan for chronic pain, headaches, sports injuries, frozen shoulder, muscle dysfunction and movement restriction. It is often incorporated alongside remedial or sports massage to support deeper muscular release and recovery.
People seek dry needling to help with:
Muscle tightness and trigger points
Neck, shoulder and back pain
Sports injuries and overuse strain
Headaches linked to muscular tension
Restricted movement and stiffness
Chronic muscular pain
Frozen shoulder and muscle dysfunction
Recovery after physical strain
How dry needling may support you
Releasing tight or overactive muscle fibres
Supporting reduced pain and muscular tension
Helping improve mobility and range of motion
Targeting deeper areas of muscular restriction
Supporting recovery from sport or overuse injuries
Working alongside remedial and sports massage treatment
What to expect
Your practitioner will assess your symptoms, movement patterns and areas of muscular tension before treatment. Fine sterile needles are then applied to selected trigger points or muscle areas to help stimulate a local response and support release.
Dry needling may create a brief twitch response or temporary soreness after treatment. Your practitioner will explain what to expect and adjust the treatment to suit your comfort and presentation.
Often used with remedial massage
Targeted trigger point treatment
Focused on muscle pain and movement
